What do seniors spend on grandchildren?

We spend too much on our three, but ours don't ask for expensive items like some kids do. I know we'll have to help out with college later on if they are going, so we try not to go overboard. Still, it's hard not to buy the grandchildren nice clothes and some of the latest gadgets. We always do more than we should.

Owens-Illinois says European sales hurt results

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (AP) ? Owens-Illinois reported a 28 percent drop in quarterly net income on Wednesday, as the economic slowdown in Europe weighed on the company's results.

The maker of glass containers reported net income of $90 million, or 55 cents per share, in the three months ending September 30. That's down from $116 million, or 72 cents per share, in the same period last year.

Sales fell 7 percent to $1.74 billion, compared with $1.86 billion in the same quarter of 2011. Sales to Europe sank 15 percent to $652 million compared with the year before.

Excluding one-time charges, adjusted earnings were 69 cents per share.

Analysts expected the company to report quarterly earnings of 67 cents per share and sales of $1.74 billion.

The company said shipments in North and South America picked up. But those gains "were more than offset by lower demand in Europe."

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, CEO Al Stroucken said in a statement that year-over-year profit should improve in South America, but adjusted earnings overall should be lower.

Owens-Illinois shares fell 35 cents to close at $19.41. The stock rose 8.2 percent in after-hours trading, to $21.

Russian investigators probe alleged military fraud

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's top investigative agency on Thursday launched a criminal probe into alleged fraud in the selloff of Defense Ministry assets, a high-profile case that could shake up the nation's scandal-marred military establishment.

It may also threaten Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, who has enjoyed President Vladimir Putin's support despite years of strong public criticism.

The Investigative Committee said that the state had suffered damage of more than 3 billion rubles ($95 million) from an alleged scheme that involved the sale of prized land plots and real estate in Moscow and other parts of Russia.

Investigators have questioned officials and conducted a series of searches at the offices of Oboronservice, a state-controlled company linked to the Defense Ministry and its affiliates, the agency said. The agency said it suspected unidentified Defense Ministry officials of using the company to sell valuable assets at prices far below their market value.

The investigators also searched the apartment of Yevgenia Vasilyeva, the former head of the Defense Ministry's property department who now holds a senior position in Oboronservice. They seized some documents and confiscated more than 3 million rubles ($95,000) in cash along with antiques, paintings and jewelry items, the agency said.

It did not say what Vasilyeva stands accused of or explain the reasons for the confiscation of her property.

The criminal case has dealt a strong blow to Serdyukov, who has long faced criticism over painful military reforms that have involved firing a large number of military officers and disbanding many military units.

Serdyukov was the board chairman at Oboronservice until 2011, and Vasilyeva was one of his close aides.

Rumors about Serdyukov's imminent dismissal have circulated over the years, but Putin has staunchly backed him. The new probe may signal that Serdyukov has lost Putin's favor.

Putin met with Serdyukov on Thursday and told him to fully cooperate with the probe, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Russian news agencies.

Serdyukov didn't show up at Thursday's Cabinet meeting. He has sought to downplay the criminal case, saying that investigators' claims have yet to be proven and that his ministry would welcome an objective probe.

The nation's military establishment has been haunted by corruption accusations for years, and many top military officials have been convicted of embezzlement.

Children's film highlights plight of animals on factory farms

The Humane Society of the United States has teamed up with the Academy Award-winning film company Aardman Animations to produce a four-minute animated children?s film exposing problems with factory farming from the perspective of a piglet named Ginger. The film?s release coincides with Food Day, a national movement for healthy, sustainable food.?

Aardman Animations, creators of "Chicken Run," "Wallace and Gromit" and other beloved animated feature films, produced the short film under a grant from the Steven C. Leuthold Family Foundation.

"The Humane Society of the United States is thrilled to celebrate Food Day with the release of this endearing and educational short film," said Joe Maxwell, vice president of outreach and engagement at The HSUS. "We hope 'A Pig?s Tail' will ignite conversation about how food gets to the table and help end inhumane practices in the pork industry."

Watch "A Pig's Tail" now ?

Sarah Cox, director at Aardman Animations, added, ?I was very proud to direct this film for The Humane Society of the United States because it is about an issue I passionately believe in. It is so important that children understand where their food really comes from, particularly the connection between meat products and the treatment of the animals that they are made from. I wanted the campaign to be positive and optimistic so I created a strong and likeable lead character - a little piglet called Ginger, and gave the story a happy ending because that is ultimately what we are trying to achieve.?

The film features voices from actress Catherine Taber and voice actor James Arnold Taylor of the animated series ?Star Wars: The Clone Wars.? Original music was produced by singer and songwriter Steven Delopoulos.?

The film, intended for children ages 7 to 10 and accessible to all audiences, follows Ginger and her mother as they experience life on a typical industrial factory farm. After Ginger is taken from her mother, she is determined to escape. The film follows her journey, and the evolution of a farmer who opens his eyes to a more humane and sustainable way of farming.

The film centers on industrial pig farming where most mother pigs are confined day and night during their four-month pregnancy in gestation crates, cages roughly the same size as the animals? bodies, preventing them from even turning around. The pigs are then placed into another crate to give birth, re-impregnated, and put back into a gestation crate. This happens pregnancy after pregnancy for their entire lives, adding up to years of virtual immobilization.

Recently, leading food companies like McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy?s, Cracker Barrel, Oscar Mayer, Costco, ConAgra and Kroger have agreed to eliminate gestation crates from their pork supply chains. This corporate shift away from crates comes on the heels of nine U.S. state laws banning the crates.

Herbal View: St. John's Wort, Patient Education

It seems to me that there are times when certain topics or situations become more important than others, more vital about which to communicate, and more crucial to know all the details.? Depression and the use of St. John?s Wort by patients would be two of those topics, in my humble opinion.

Based on the information about St. John?s Wort found here and here, nurses and other healthcare providers should be aware of the numerous drug interactions between St. John?s Wort and many commonly prescribed medications.

Be sure to refer back to the lists of questions and discussion that further expand the scope of knowledge for both the nurse and patient.

Of course, patient privacy and the choices? that one would make is ultimately up to the individual. Nurses can fulfill their role by making sure patients know the facts, have access to information, and feel like their question and concerns can be discussed openly.

Further reference materials to research and pass along to a patient would include:

  • Herb, Nutrient, and Drug Interactions:? Clinical Implications and Therapeutic Strategies ? By Mitchell Stargrove, ND, LAc; Jonathan Treasure, MA, MNIMH, RH (AHG), MCPP; and Dwight McKee, MD, Diplomate, American Boards of Internal Medicine
  • Botanical Medicine for Women?s Health ? by Aviva Romm, CPM, RH (AHG), President, American herbalists Guild; Executive Editor, Journal of the american herbalist Guild, Canton, GA, USA

Other publications are found on this site, though they are a bit older and may be outdated in their research.

Pitcher rips Obama on Twitter

PHOENIX ? Righty Trevor Bauer is as insistent in his politics as he is in his pitching,?and the Diamondbacks are not about to confuse the two.
?
Bauer sent out a series of tweets during the presidential debate Monday, starting a spirited Twitter debate with his initial remarks about President Barack Obama.
?
?Obama looked childish and petty tonight. I'm ashamed that he is commander in chief of this great nation," Bauer said in the first tweet that appeared on his feed, @BauerOutage.
?
Bauer went on to tweet that he believed in Republican candidate Mitt Romney?s economic strategy,?drawing both praise and criticism.
?
?My idea of social media is to be accessible to fans so they have a way of getting to know me, my likes, dislikes, opinions, Etc.,? Bauer tweeted.
?
?I simply shared my impression of this debate. Didn't try to tell anyone they had to agree with me,? read another, after?Bauer received some negative responses.
?
D-backs managing partner Ken Kendrick, who raised the question of Bauer?s maturity level in regards to understanding his role on the team late?this season, said one has nothing to do with the other.
?
?My reaction is, in a way, it makes me feel good that a young person in sports does care about things that are not just sports,? Kendrick said.
?
?It?s not my place to comment on someone else?s political views. I think everybody should be entitled to their own political views. The fact that he has views and is willing to express them, I kind of find refreshing.?
?
Kendrick called Bauer ?an interesting young man with a lot of individual traits.?
?
Regarding?his comments at the end of the year, he added,??My comments about maturity were, when you work for a sports team ... I think you have a serious responsibility to your management, your manager, your coaches and your teammates, to have a team attitude. That?s where I think the maturity comes. That?s what I was saying. I didn?t say it artfully.
?
?Having a view that is not about sports only, or opinions that are not about sports only, I think is generally a healthy thing for a young person,? Kendrick said.

Attempts to reach Bauer for comment were unsuccessful.

Burton Snowboards Restructure: Analog Back to Vermont, Gravis to Japan

Burlington, Vt.-based snowboarding company Burton Snowboards has announced a restructuring plan that will see the closure of the Costa Mesa headquarters for two of its brands.

The changes are intended to bring Burton back to a focus on its core snowboarding gear and related products, according to the company.

?Burton has experienced several years of income growth since the recession and paid out bonuses to employees over the last two years,? Burton Chief Executive Jake Burton said in a statement. ?That said, the economy has a voice of its own that we all have to listen to, and the message is clear: do what you do best and focus purely on it. In our case, that means to narrow our focus to the sport and lifestyle that got us here?snowboarding.?

Burton?s Costa Mesa office is home to its Analog Clothing skateboarding-, snowboarding- and surfboarding-inspired brand along with shoemaker Gravis Footwear.

Burton told trade publication Transworld Business that the move out of Costa Mesa is expected to be done over the next six months.

Analog is expected to return to Burton?s Vermont headquarters and will become a snowboarding-only brand, ending its ties with the surf and skate world by next fall. The Analog brand will sell outerwear and technical clothing only during the winter.

Gravis, which mainly sells footwear, will move to Tokyo and will only be available in Asian markets, where the brand is most popular. The change for Gravis will be effective fall 2013.

Burton moved its Analog division from Vermont to Irvine in 2004. The company moved to Costa Mesa earlier this year.

The restructuring also impacts other Burton brands, including its RED helmet and protective wear brand and eyewear brand Anon among others.

5 Terrifying Moments from Video Game History ? Man Cave Daily

by Steve Stevenson

The great thing about video games is their potential to immerse us totally in a fictional world. Even in their early days, with graphics that would make a Rubik?s Cube laugh scornfully, video games could capture the imagination and tap directly into our adrenal glands. That?s great if you want the buzz of drifting a ferrari, or exploding a star-cruiser. It?s slightly more worrying, though, when the video game?s sole objective is to make you @?$! your pants.

So steel yourself, brave gamer, as we take a journey through video game history and take a look at some of the? OH MY GOD LOOK BEHIND YOU!!

METROIDS!! (Metroid, 1986)

samus versus metroids

For about ten days in the ?80s, there were more female video game characters than female video game players

When home gaming was just beginning its golden-age, Metroid was a ground-breaking newcomer that seemed gargantuan and labyrinthine compared to its peers. Set on an eerie alien world, you took control of a futuristic bounty-hunter, and could wander for hours through haunting caverns filled with more dangerous indigenous lifeforms than Australia could shake a spider-infested stick at.

It wasn?t until the final level that the true horror began. Dropping suddenly into a laboratory-like environment where automated guns fired at you with alarming regularity was disconcerting enough; but then came the Metroids? hulking jellyfish-like abominations unlike anything you had encountered before. They were impervious to most of your weaponry, honed in on you with frightening speed, and once they caught you they didn?t stop leeching your energy until you were dead.

Metroids might seem like child?s-play to a modern gamer, but at the time, enemies with this kind of merciless attack-pattern were unprecedented. More worrying still is that you would have been leveling up your character throughout the entire game up to this point, modifying your energy and weapons capabilities until you felt damn near invincible. To have an enemy that made a nonsense of all your achievements suddenly ambush you was, to say the least, bowel troubling. Worst of all, if you were unfortunate enough to make it this far without obtaining the ice-beam weapon, the Metroids were impossible to kill. There hadn?t been a more horrifying surprise at the end of a game since John Doe from Se7en hosted Let?s Make A Deal.

LEECH AMBUSH!! (Splatterhouse, 1988)

rick is ambushed by bore worms in splatterhouse

If the ?80s taught us one thing, it?s that nobody in a goalie mask is the hero

In the late ?80s Splatterhouse carved its way into the arcades with all the subtlety of a rusty lump hammer. Squeezing every horror movie trope for all it was worth, Splatterhouse became a nightmare mishmash of grotesque demons, deadly poltergeists and womb-like abominations? all of which you could splat into wallpaper paste with a well-timed blow from your axe-handle. With hanging corpses that puked acid at you, and chainsaw-handed freaks getting all up in your grill, Splatterhouse was full of awful surprises?none more so awful than the boreworm ambush.

It started when you entered the first boss room, and instantly realised that you were totally boned. By this point you would yet to have encountered boreworms?they?re leech-like creatures that are fast and difficult to hit, a pain in the ass that rank right up there with the birds from Castlevania. And now you had wandered into a room where they were piled up like dirty laundry. What followed was possibly the most button-mashing, joystick-wiggling panic dance in arcade history, as you desperately tried to avoid being overwhelmed. Then, when you thought it was all over, the corpse that had been hanging by its neck from an open attic throughout the whole ordeal suddenly had a surprise for you? a final boreworm that burst from its chest, just in time to see you squeal like a girl. Perhaps not one of the first examples of a video game salute to the Thank-God-He?s-Dead-Oh-No-Wait-He-Isn?t horror trope, but certainly one of the most memorable.

WHY WON?T IT DIE!?!? (Resident Evil, 1996)

chris red field takes on a zombie in resident evil

?Excuse me, sir? Is this your mansi?AAAIEEE IT HAS NO NOSE!?

Although Resident Evil wasn?t the first game in its genre, it was the first of its kind to find a home on the massively popular Playstation games console, and is justly credited with bringing survival horror to the masses. It?s important to remember that up to this point, for many gamers, the entire concept of survival strategy in a horror game was summed up with ?shoot stuff until stuff is dead?. A demon/zombie/girl-scout would charge you, and you would shoot it. Rinse and repeat. End of story. So when us innocent console gamers of the past piloted our clumsy Jill Valentines or Chris Redfields into their first zombie encounter, we really weren?t prepared for what came next?

The game?s focus on tense atmosphere, creepy music and a (for the time) ground-breaking cutscene couldn?t have prepared us for that first moment when, after pumping a zombie full of your limited pistol bullets, it got up from the ground and tried to eat the look of panic clean off your face. More shots, more blood, and still it came. Crawling now, and still moaning like some kind of ghostly cow. And God help you if you tried to take it on with the knife?

Sure, the rest of the game was mostly solving over-elaborate puzzles and hilariously bad dialogue, but for that one shining moment, when I fondly remember spending a full two minutes training a pistol on a computer sprite just incase it wasn?t really dead, Resident Evil raised the bar in video game terror.

DWARVES!!! ARRRRGH!! (Silent Hill, 1999)

dwarf attacks in silent hill

?We prefer to be called little people from hell.?

Unlike Resident Evil, which became more about terrible plots and convoluted action sequences, Silent Hill dedicated itself entirely to creeping you out. Whether you were being chased through the dense fog by sinister mutants, or stumbling through a dark alternate nightmare world of blood and rust, Silent Hill used every trick in the book to keep you on edge.

Perhaps one of its cleverest tricks was the use of the radio and the torch. For those of you unfamiliar with either the game or the movie (shame on you, go rent one or both right now) the broken radio would emit a creepy burst of static whenever monsters were approaching, and with many of the levels being in total darkness, the torch would often be the only point of light in the game. The clever twist was that the very things that let you see and hear your enemies, also let them see and hear you?

This was first made apparent in the school level, where the abandoned, pitch-black corridors were patrolled by shuffling, mutant dwarf monsters. You could walk into a room with your radio and torch turned off and hear them moving around. You could choose to brave the dark and hopefully sneak past them, or you could use your torch and radio. Almost as soon as you turned the torch on the monsters would zero in on you, coming out of the shadows and into your circle of light like something out of a nightmare, while your radio crackled and whined the soundtrack to your imminent demise.

These days, the kind of lighting effects in games that allow a room to be lit by a portable light source are taken for granted, but at the time of its release the technology was still groundbreaking, and Silent Hill used it in a way that still stands up to modern games in terms of ruining a perfectly good pair of pants.

I?M LOSING MY MIND!! NEEEEEEEE!!!! (Eternal Darkness, 2004)

a women dead in the bath tub in eternal darkness

Blood is great for the skin, but only when it?s underneath it

Eternal Darkness doesn?t make the scary-moments grade because its monsters are the most intimidating, or its atmosphere the most tense; it makes the grade because how it tries to scare you is by far the most fun and original way in video game history. Eternal Darkness tries to convince you that you?re losing your mind.

For those of you who haven?t played the game, please don?t read on. Go and find an old copy of the game and play it through. It?s not the best game out there, but there are certain moments that?ll make you glad you made the effort.

Now, for those who have played, you?ll likely remember the times when your character would suddenly return to a room only to find themselves walking on the ceiling, or that your television would appear to mute itself, or that your inventory would suddenly be wiped. Or maybe your game would pretend to to crash, or stop midway to tell you you?d only purchased a demo version. Or sprinkle power-ups around making you think you?d hit the jackpot, only to have the screen white out while your avatar clutched his or her head, bemoaning their lost marbles as you realize the power-ups were never there in the first place. Eternal Darkness was crammed with more ?What the @?$%?? moments than Clint Eastwood?s entire history of political commentary.

Eternal Darkness may not have been a heavy-weight in the horror game circles- appearing only on the comparatively under-powered Game Cube system- but it achieved with originality and creativity what many slicker games failed to do with blood and guts.

CONCLUSION

Its easy to become jaded with horror themed games these days. After all, those of us who are grownup are less concerned with zombies and demons and more concerned with unemployment or that weird lump on our foot. And the younger kids? They?ve grown up with YouTube, and have thus become desensitised to the point that grizzled Vietnam veterans would shake their head in pity. But there are still great games out there bringing us brand new worlds, brand new monsters, and brand new ways to die. So here?s to the game developers, past and present, who have done their damnedest to momentarily take us out of the real world, and submerge us fully into a realm of spine-tingling terror. Thanks guys? I guess?

4 Powerful Steps to List Building | Residual Incomes ...

4 Steps To List Building Success

Who wouldn?t want to learn how to create an online system that builds multiple income streams on autopilot and does this consistently, converting sales at a high rate? Any marketer would love to generate 300 Leads/day that pay for themselves (FREE) or pull a profit and allow you to add a big extra income or replace your current one, take advantage of and harness online trends, technology, video, social networking etc.

This Blueprint has allowed people to:

Build REAL businesses without cold calling or bugging friends & family, build networks of simple but powerful sites that generate thousands of leads per day and hundreds of thousands in commissions, multiple streams of income to the tune of hundreds of thousands PLUS the biggest teams in various business opportunities.

Here is the specific method to you can use to model what professional marketers have been doing for years online. It?s important to understand that the Internet changed EVERYTHING in the home based business industry.

The Internet created Problems and Opportunities that must be mitigated or exploited to your advantage in the creation of a REAL business.

The list of problems inclue:

1. Increase in Competition and Increase in Information

Competitors are Advertising on your keywords daily. Pricing and other private information is now instantly revealed online by competitors on blogs, forums and social networking sites. The Trend of ?Bash and Redirect? marketing by your competition online is rediculous and really harms the whole industry. There are negative reviews, and positive reviews and a whole lot of misinformation and reports created by competition to make you look bad.

2. Decrease In Prospect?s Attention Spans

?You have 2-3 seconds to grab their attention and put them in a marketing process. We live in a microwave ?A.D.D.? culture and you must engage your prospect with relevant information fast or lose them to someone who does.

3. Decrease in Customer Retention Rates

Related to attention span this applies specially with business opportunity builders. You have 2 months to involve them or else they?re gone. If they don?t see the results they expected with your product, service or opportunity, they will search the internet, click on a competitor?s add and they are gone. There is no long term ?residual? income anymore. Downlines are just not hanging around enough to make this a reality.

The reasons for this are:

So much information is available at anyone?s fingertips that people are easily distracted. There is such short attention spans that people begin to hop from message to message and makes them susceptible to ?program hopping? and this happens within weeks of a new marketer joining you and there is nothing you can do to keep them from the internet.

We?re living in the era of the ?PreLaunch? where new competing programs, courses and products are being designed every week and your customers and prospects are searching, finding and filling out forms on web sites left and right. This KILLS ?Residual? Income. If you don?t build a system that effectively deals with this issues you will burn out. Marketers are working harder, while their businesses are stagnating, or worse, decreasing in profitability.

4. Increase in Legal Oversight

Big companies don?t want the risk the inherent liability with allowing their inexperienced, unprofessional sales reps to market on the internet and potentially expose the company to lawsuits and complaints. Inexperienced marketers use hype and overexaggerated claims in their ads, blogs, sites and marketing messages and it?s hard to control the quality of the marketing being published by hundreds of thousands of sales reps desperate to make a sale.

The answer for big MLM companies? They prohibit online marketing. So those are the big four issues that have been created as the MLM/Network Marketing arena came to the internet.

How do you get around this? I call it The Internet Marketing Success Formula and the main concept is simply this:? You, Inc.

Direct Response Marketing. Attraction Marketing and List Building. The specific strategy is designed to accomplish a couple things:

1. Enable anyone? to generate free leads using online list building.

2. Allow Attraction Market to sell your opportunity for you automatically.

This creates significant leverage. Traditional home business prospecting tactics provide no leverage. Phone prospecting provides NO leverage. You can only call so many people one on one each day to make a profit. No leverage. No system.

Attraction Marketing and Online List Building allows you to leverage the power of the internet to use lead capture pages, web sites, autoresponders and email marketing to reach thousands of people each day on autopilot and deliver a simple, professional message whether you?re new or experienced.

3. Immunize your business from competition.

There are millions of other representatives globally marketing thousands of business opportunities like yours. There is a ton of competition in your own company and outside of your company that you need to insulate yourself from.

4. Multiple Streams of Income

It?s more powerful to be able to use ONE system to make ten times more money for your efforts versus just building one company.

What is You, Inc?

In a typical home based business, people are trying to build a ?downline? and they assume that they are building a business. A downline in a network marketing program is not a real business. You don?t own anything. You don?t own any assets. You don?t own any significant equity in the company, it?s plant, equipment or goodwill. Real businesses allow you to have and own real assets. Most home based businesses position you as a commission only sales rep.

The company can take away your business at any time. They can strip your database from you, all the other distributors in your group and they can forfeit your commissions for a wide variety of reasons. This puts you at risk as an entrepreneur. Your entire business does not belong to you and you don?t really control anything other than making sales today.

Companies touted that you were building a legacy that could be willed to your children. This has RARELY, if ever happened. If you are not constantly building and working your business? it?s dying. This is how you can own a real business where you have equity, own assets that nobody can take away from you and where you can generate multiple income streams from building one business.

YOU INC.

The concept of You,Inc consists of you building and owning:

1. Your List/Social Networks ? Distribution Channel. Asset. The List IS your business

2. Building a Relationship with your list which gives it its value. Goodwill. Equity. Net Value.

You are the owner of a distribution channel.

For people who doubt that this simple concept works, it?s how professional marketers are able to send out a collection of 3-4 emails to their lists promoting an information product or coaching program that is relevant to their list and they generate over $239,221 in sales in a matter of days.

This happens consistently online with marketers that know how to build a list and build relationships with the people on their list. This is powerful leverage. That is the power of the You, Inc business model.

Let?s Break Down The Formula:

1. Build Your List

2. Build Relationship with? your list

3. Market to your List

Let?s cover each step in a bit more detail:

1. Build List

Advertising and driving traffic online using Facebook, Twitter, Articles, Search Engine Marketing, Videos, and Pay Per Click ads, etc. You drive this traffic to lead capture pages that capture the prospect?s contact information so you can follow up by using an email autoresponder service to send out a series of education and relationship building emails. You offer value and relevant information to build trust. People buy from sources they know, like and trust.

2. Relationship Building with the people on your list.

This creates the most important value in your list, which is basically your own distribution channel. In order to build effective relationships with the people on your list you must be willing to GIVE without expecting anything in return.

Giving them value FIRST without want. How can you serve others more? Reciprocity, leadership, trust, value, and equity are some of the qualities and tactics used in attraction marketing to endear you to your follower list. You don?t need the biggest list around. You need to build a responsive,? valuable list that knows, likes and trusts you so they will buy from you.

3. Market/Monetize Your List

?Being able to build a list that buys from you gives you the ability to basically generate free leads. You advertise consistently for traffic, which builds your list. You then offer them compelling information that generates profits to your upfront before they join your primary business opportunity. These sales help you offset the cost of generating them in the first place and now you can use your follow up system to generate repeat sales long term. Leads are not cheap to buy or generate. The average leads costs about $5 each. It?s critically important to generate them for free. You can use effective online advertising to generate them for $5 each. You can then use a marketing funded proposal to earn $10 back each. This income gives you the leverage to keep advertising indefinitely and generate more sales on the back end of your marketing system. This Builds true leverage.

An email autoresponder series can teach and train and promote to your prospects on autopilot. It produces sales, profits and leverage. You can set up 12 months worth of messages and put your business on cruise control.

This concept allows you to:

Systematize List Building, systematize relationship building, systematize the monetization into multiple sources of sales, and it allows for Instant downline building. Leaders who are skilled in this tactic are the ones who can join a company one day, recommend it to their list via an email and invite their prospects to a webinar, or conference call or web site that explains the opportunity and generates an instant downline, over night. It?s exactly how that is done.

You now have ultimate security. The only way to lose this type of business and equity is to lose your reputation and credibility with your list. You do not have this with a Business Opportunity program alone. With this optimized business model you create a couple important things:

You own a distributions channel. You have a relationship with that channel. You monetize that channel.

This provides the ultimate in:

Leverage.

Security.

The details behind these steps are found in a variety of courses and ebooks, audios and videos available online. The actual step by step action items you can take to build this are easily accessible. This is a simple to understand and follow blueprint that? allows you to tap into and harness the internet to build a real business. It?s works for everyone. Anywhere in the world. Own a real asset and a real business. Be able to produce as many leads as you want for free. Be able to tap into the power of multiple streams of income. Be able to sponsor people automatically into your primary. Be able to create cash any time that you want to. Just by sitting down and sending out an email?

That is what today?s online marketing world is all about.?

What Mitt Romney needs to do at the final debate

Political Punch

Tonight's third and final presidential debate will focus entirely on international politics and foreign policy. ?Expect?Benghazi to be one of the major issues, a subject on which, for the first time in nearly a month, the Obama administration will have the upper hand.

"The Romney campaign had the high ground on this issue for weeks. They lost that high ground at the second debate by alleging, suggesting the Obama administration had misled the American public on Benghazi," says Josh Rogin, of Foreign Policy's The Cable.

"It took the president 14 days before he called the attack on the embassy an act of terror," Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said at that debate. Obama had in fact called it an act of terror the day after the attack, though the administration spent the next two weeks avoiding the term terror, blaming the attack ?on an anti-Muslim video and claiming some of it was spontaneous.

Still, "there's no real evidence that they misled, it's possible they were just wrong. And President Obama seized on that and called that offensive and...now the president has regained the moral high authority on this issue."

"Of course the administration's argument that they were just incompetent and not misleading is not a perfect argument," says Rogin with a laugh, "but that's the one they're going with."

At tonight's debate Romney will have to focus on the fact "that the administration did make intelligence mistakes and security mistakes in the lead up to the attack, and the communication and messaging mistakes in the follow-up after the attack," says Rogin.

Tune in to ABCNews.com tonight for livestreaming coverage of the final 2012 Presidential Town Hall Debate in Boca Raton, Fla.

Beyond Benghazi, Rogin says Romney will make the case that there is a clear contrast between him and President Obama on three big issues: The use of American power abroad, its stance with Israel, and defense spending and the future of the nation's military spending.

Obama, however, has sent more troops to Afghanistan and involved the United States in Libya. Obama may be more multilateral than others would be, but the United States remains a player on the world stage.

"There's a gap here between Romney's rhetoric and the policies that he would set out that would actually be different from the Obama administration," says Rogin. "If you look at specific issues like Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, what a Romney administration would do if elected is not so different from what the Obama administration is doing right now, which is a very centrist, realist approach to national security."

What the Romney campaign does do, is blame the Obama administration for not doing enough.

"It's their creative sort of way of saying that our policies going forward aren't much different, but they somehow would have been more effective had they been in office," says Rogin.

Pope names 7 new saints, seeks to revive faith

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Some 80,000 pilgrims in flowered lei, feathered headdresses and other traditional garb flooded St. Peter's Square on Sunday as Pope Benedict XVI added seven more saints onto the roster of Catholic role models in a bid to reinvigorate the faith in parts of the world where it's lagging.

Two of the new saints were Americans: Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American saint from the U.S., and Mother Marianne Cope, a 19th century Franciscan nun who cared for leprosy patients in Hawaii.

It seemed as if a third saint, Pedro Calungsod, a 17th century Filipino teenage martyr, drew the biggest crowd of all, with Rome's sizeable Filipino expat community turning out in flag-waving droves to welcome the country's second saint.

In his homily, Benedict praised each of the seven as heroic and courageous examples for the entire church, calling Cope a "shining" model for Catholics and Kateri an inspiration to indigenous faithful across North America.

"May the witness of these new saints ... speak today to the whole church, and may their intercession strengthen and sustain her in her mission to proclaim the Gospel to the whole world," he said.

The celebrations began at dawn, with Native Americans in beaded and feathered headdresses and leather-fringed tunics singing songs to Kateri to the beat of drums as the sun rose over St. Peter's Square.

Later, the crowds cheered as the pope read out the names of each of the new saints in Latin and declared that they were worthy of veneration by the entire church. Prayers were read out in Mohawk and Cebuano, the dialect of Calungsod's native Cebu province, and in English by a nun wearing a lei.

"It's so nice to see God showing all the flavors of the world," marveled Gene Caldwell, a Native American member of the Menominee reservation in Neopit, Wisconsin, who attended with his wife, Linda. "The Native Americans are enthralled" to have Kateri canonized, he said.

The canonization coincided with a Vatican meeting of the world's bishops on trying to revive Christianity in places where it's fallen by the wayside.

Several of the new saints were missionaries, making clear the pope hopes their example ? even though they lived hundreds of years ago ? will be relevant today as the Catholic Church tries to hold on to its faithful. It's a tough task as the Vatican faces competition from evangelical churches in Africa and Latin America, increasing secularization in the West and disenchantment due to the clerical sex abuse scandal in Europe and beyond.

The two American saints actually hail from roughly the same place ? what is today upstate New York ? although they lived two centuries apart.

Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," Kateri was born in 1656 to a pagan Iroquois father and an Algonquin Christian mother. Her parents and only brother died when she was 4 during a smallpox epidemic that left her badly scarred and with impaired eyesight. She went to live with her uncle, a Mohawk, and was baptized Catholic by Jesuit missionaries. But she was ostracized and persecuted by other natives for her faith, and she died in what is now Canada when she was 24.

Speaking in English and French, in honor of Kateri's Canadian ties, Benedict noted how unusual it was in Kateri's indigenous culture for her to choose to devote herself to her Catholic faith.

"May her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are," Benedict said. "Saint Kateri, protectress of Canada and the first Native American saint, we entrust you to the renewal of the faith in the first nations and in all of North America!"

Among the few people chosen to receive Communion from the pope himself was Jake Finkbonner, a 12-year-old boy of Native American descent from the western U.S. state of Washington, whose recovery from an infection of flesh-eating bacteria was deemed "miraculous" by the Vatican. The Vatican determined that Jake was cured through Kateri's intercession after his family and community invoked her in their prayers, paving the way for her canonization.

Cope is revered among many Catholics in Hawaii, where she arrived from New York in 1883 to care for leprosy patients on Kalaupapa, an isolated peninsula on Molokai Island where Hawaii governments forcibly exiled them for decades. At the time, there was widespread fear of the disfiguring disease, which can cause skin lesions, mangled fingers and toes and lead to blindness.

Cope, however, led a band of Franciscan nuns to the peninsula to care for the patients, just as Saint Damien, a Belgian priest, did in 1873. He died of the disease 16 years later and was canonized in 2009.

"At a time when little could be done for those suffering from this terrible disease, Marianne Cope showed the highest love, courage and enthusiasm," Benedict said in his homily. "She is a shining and energetic example of the best of the tradition of Catholic nursing sisters and of the spirit of her beloved St. Francis."

Two-hundred fifty pilgrims from Hawaii traveled to Rome for Mother Marianne's canonization, including nine Kalaupapa patients, as well as faithful from the local diocese.

"Marianne Cope means a great deal to us," said pilgrim Aida Javier, who traveled from Honolulu with her husband Romy for the Mass. "My husband and I feel blessed and honored to be part of this canonization."

Another pilgrim was Sharon Smith, of Syracuse, New York, whose 2005 cure from complications from pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, was declared medically inexplicable by the Vatican ? the "miracle" needed for Mother Marianne to be named a saint. In an interview last week, Smith recounted how she had fainted one day in her home, an allergic reaction to medication she was taking for a kidney transplant, and awoke in the hospital to find that doctors weren't giving her much time to live.

Her disease was eating away at her insides, causing her stomach to detach from her intestines. Doctors said they couldn't repair it. At a certain point, a nun pinned a bag of ashes and dirt from Mother Marianne's grave on her and prayed.

"I had never heard of her, but we continued to pray," Smith said. "And I just, I started getting better."

"I believe in miracles, but I don't know whether it was all the prayers, or the pinning of the relic, but I know that something worked, and I'm here for some reason," Smith said.

The Vatican's complicated saint-making procedure requires that the Vatican certify a "miracle" was performed through the intercession of the candidate ? a medically inexplicable cure that can be directly linked to the prayers offered by the faithful. One miracle is needed for beatification, a second for canonization.

The Philippines' second saint, Calungsod, was a Filipino teenager who helped Jesuit priests convert natives in Guam in the 17th century but was killed by spear-wielding villagers opposed to the missionaries' efforts to baptize their children.

"We are especially proud because he is so young," said Marianna Dieza, a 39-year-old housekeeper working in Rome who was on hand for the Mass.

The other new saints are: Jacques Berthieu, a 19th century French Jesuit who was killed by rebels in Madagascar, where he had worked as a missionary; Giovanni Battista Piamarta, an Italian who founded a religious order in 1900 and established a Catholic printing and publishing house in his native Brescia; Carmen Salles y Barangueras, a Spanish nun who founded a religious order to educate children in 1892; and Anna Schaeffer, a 19th century German lay woman who became a model for the sick and suffering after she fell into a boiler and badly burned her legs. The wounds never healed, causing her constant pain.

On release day, animals embrace freedom with eagerness and reluctance

All Animals magazine, November/December 2012

by Karen E. Lange

On the morning of the rehabilitated animals? release back into the wild, Tatiana Ter?n is excited but a little sad: ?I should not get attached,? says the veterinarian. ?But it?s hard when animals come in as babies.?

To ensure the animals returning to the wild don?t end up right back in the trade, they will be trucked to a cattle ranch that is heavily guarded against rustlers, one of five carefully selected private properties where the rescue center releases animals because Nicaragua?s ?protected? areas are overrun with poachers. ?We look for places that have safety above all,? says Sacasa.

Their journey ends in a wetland drained for cattle pasture, not far from the Honduras border. Across a water-filled ditch stands a patch of forest, part of a wildlife corridor. By the time the rescue center truck arrives, it?s midday and hot, but the trees offer shade and relative cool. After so many months of preparation, animals are released in rapid succession.

The chocoyos immediately fly into the trees and begin to call to each other, chattering in a noisy group, already at home in the wild. The white-faced capuchins rush out of their cage as soon as the door is opened and run off, like athletes taking the field. Several armadillos taught at the rescue center to root out worms leave their crates and within a few steps are sniffing the dirt for food, digging into the soil with their feet.

A scarlet macaw is so sought after by poachers that they can only be released in one place: an island with no bridges to the mainland.

Other animals are slower. The two yellow-naped parrots also confiscated in the 2010 raid and two toucans seized by police at an intersection barely make it into the trees. These birds are active in the early morning, not the middle of the day, and one parrot spends about an hour maybe 10 feet off the ground, unmoving even when Sacasa shakes the branches. Sleepy owls complain angrily and must be persuaded from their cages. Several caracaras rescued from roadside sellers stand dazed until Sacasa stamps his boots and they take flight. One of the two kinkajous stubbornly refuses to exit his crate, despite the calls of a second, who has climbed slowly but steadily up a tree. ?Campa?ero, campa?ero (partner, buddy),? Sacasa says, waving his hat to encourage the reluctant kinkajou to make his move. The animal sniffs at some leaves. Finally, he moves out and up and into the wild.

It isn?t ideal, but logistics?the distance from the capital, the cost of each trip?have dictated the nature of the release. And it works, for most all the animals. The hope is that there will come a day when mass releases are no longer necessary, when Nicaragua?s animals won?t be taken from the wild in the first place.

The chocoyos alight in a raucous flock and fly into some palms, giddy, exuberant in their freedom. The air thickens with humidity. The sky grows a deeper and deeper blue, a gray blue. Lightning flashes and rain pours down, cooling the forest, refreshing the just-released animals, running off the now empty cages.

Set aside debate over Romney tax math: Is tax reform a good idea?

The momentous policy challenge of how to fix America's dysfunctional tax system has been largely obscured by the debate over Mitt Romney's tax math. But there's broad support for tax reform.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / October 19, 2012

One of the biggest policy questions at stake in the presidential election ?? how to fix America's dysfunctional tax system ? has become largely obscured by bickering over the budgetary math of one candidate's proposal.

The scrutiny of Mitt Romney's plan for a 20 percent cut in income tax rates is deserved. That's a big tax change, and he hasn't explained how he would pay for it at a time of chronic federal deficits ? which he also pledges to reduce.

But the legitimate questioning of Romney's math has to some extent short-circuited campaign debate over a much bigger issue: The US tax code is widely perceived as burdensome, as it imposes steep compliance costs and unduly distorts the behavior of businesses and households. Reforming it offers a promising way to improve the health of both federal budgets and the economy.

The big question is how to approach that task. Mr. Romney's plan may or may not be the right one, but his general idea ? lowering tax rates while limiting things like deductions in order to "broaden the base" of taxable income ? is viewed by many tax experts as one promising path forward.

Amid the din of dueling sound bites from the campaigns, some voices on the sidelines are warning that this bigger picture is getting lost.

"The real story should not be about one campaign nit-picking the budgetary impact of the other campaign?s proposals," Alex Brill, a research fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, opined in an online commentary this month. "Rather the real story should be about the substantive policy visions of each of the candidates."

Mr. Brill was aiming his comment at President Obama and his Democratic allies. Others have similar concerns about Republicans.

"Let?s all take a deep breath here," Howard Gleckman, of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, appealed on Thursday after the Romney campaign accused the center of issuing a new analysis that was "misleading and deceitful."

In fact, Mr. Gleckman argued in a blog post, the center's latest research efforts "provide evidence that a deduction cap," an idea Romney has floated, "is a pretty good ... idea."

For the record, the Tax Policy Center and the American Enterprise Institute are themselves part of the fray over Romney's tax math. The center is funded by two left-leaning think tanks, and while it has a reputation as nonpartisan, its analyses have been used heavily by critics of the Romney plan. Brill, meanwhile, made his comments within an article that also sought to rebut those critics.

Three basic issues in tax reform

But both Brill and Gleckman are right that there's much more to debate than the details, or lack of details, in Romney's plan.

Basically, the idea of tax reform revolves around three issues: how to obtain needed revenue for the federal government, how to be fair (what level of "progressivity" to have in the tax code), and how to maximize economic growth.

Romney emphasizes the goal of restraining the amount of tax revenue the government takes, and calls for big federal spending cuts to avoid big deficits. He also says he wants the code essentially to retain its current progressive structure (with the top 5 percent of households continuing to pay a 60 percent share of income taxes). And he argues that simplifying the code, with lower rates for corporations as well as individuals, will boost economic growth.

He has brought the math debate upon himself, by announcing very ambitious goals (cutting rates by 20 percent would bring the top tax rate down from 35 percent to 28 percent) while leaving other key details unspecified.

Obama wants government to get more revenue than would occur if the Bush tax cuts all remained in place. On fairness, his stated goal is to keep taxes essentially the same for the bottom 98 percent of households, while asking the rich to pay more as their "fair share."

While his budget plan endorses the idea that tax reform can enhance economic growth, Obama talks more often about the positive growth effects that can come from government investments (such as in education or infrastructure) than from tax reform.

This Study Shows How to Lose a Lot of Weight?and Keep It Off

This Study Shows How to Lose a Lot of Weight?and Keep It OffIf you want to know the secret of successful weight loss and management, take a look at the results from The National Weight Control Registry. The participants in the study lost an average of 66 pounds each and kept it off for 5.5 years. Here's how they did it.

The National Weight Control Registry is a database of about 4,000 people who maintained at least a 30 pound weight loss for at least one year.

Although there were variations in how quickly they lost weight and how much, there are four things NWCR members have in common:

  • 90% of them say they exercise, on average, about 1 hour per day
  • 78% eat breakfast every day
  • 75% weigh themselves at least once a week
  • 62% watch fewer than 10 hours of TV per week

These may seem like obvious common sense essentials for weight loss, but they're still important findings. The fact that 89% of the participants used a combination of both diet and exercise reinforces the importance of both.

The dedication to a significant and extensive amount of daily exercise is also notable. Twenty-eight percent of participants used only walking as their exercise. The researchers also put pedometers on a sample of the participants and found they walked about 5.5 to 6 miles a day?far beyond the minimal guidelines.

Frequent weighing is also interesting, since some people think weighing too often is counter-productive when trying to lose weight. Weighing yourself at least weekly could be an "early warning system" to keep you on track for the long term.

Royal Society Runs Science Women Wiki Marathon

60-Second Science

The Royal Society is looking for volunteers create or enhance entries on female scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Karen Hopkin reports

More 60-Second Science

Quick: name a famous female scientist. If you said "Marie Curie," you?re not alone. In fact, a lot of people can?t think of a single other example. Well, England's Royal Society is fixin? to rectify that. On Friday, October 19th, it?s sponsoring a Wiki-editing marathon for articles about women in science.

Wikipedia is the go-to source for information on pretty much everything. But its coverage is a little light when it comes to the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and math. So the Royal Society is looking for volunteers with wi-fi and a bit of Wiki knowhow to create or enhance entries on female scientists.

Suggestions include Lilian Bland, the first woman to build and fly her own aircraft; Martha Ludwig, who helped solve the first protein crystal structure done in the US; and Barbara Crawford Johnson, the only woman to serve on the NASA team that engineered the moon landing.

You can take part in the effort using Twitter. The hashtag is #WomenSciWP. That?s women-S-C-I-W-P. So give Marie Curie a well-earned rest and help other women in science get the wiki-recognition they deserve.

US commander in Japan apologizes for rape case

TOKYO (AP) ? The commander of U.S. forces in Japan apologized Friday for a case in which two American sailors allegedly raped a woman in Okinawa, and said all U.S. military personnel in the country will now be subject to a curfew and other restrictions.

A statement released by U.S. Forces Japan says the 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew will apply to U.S. military personnel whether they are stationed in Japan or just visiting. It requires them to be in their homes, on base or wherever they are lodging.

Lt. Gen. Salvatore Angelella said U.S. military members in Japan also will have to take "core values training." The military's liberty policy is also under review.

The two sailors were in Okinawa on a brief stopover and are now in Japanese custody. According to Japanese media, they had been drinking before they attacked the woman, in her 20s, who was on her way home before dawn Tuesday.

The case has drawn protests from the Japanese government and an outcry on Okinawa, where the presence of U.S. military has long been a sore point. The island hosts more than half the 47,000 U.S. troops in Japan.

"I want to personally apologize for the grief and trauma the victim has endured and the anger it has caused among the people of Okinawa," Angelella told reporters.

Angelella said American military personnel are "held to a higher standard."

Both he and U.S. Ambassador to Japan John V. Roos said the U.S. will cooperate in the Okinawan police investigation. Roos said the U.S. government viewed the situation with "utmost seriousness."

"We will put forward every effort to make sure that incidents like this do not happen," Roos said.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has begun its own investigation, although Japan has primary jurisdiction.

Seaman Christopher Browning of Athens, Texas, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Dozierwalker of Muskogee, Okla., were arrested Tuesday. Both are 23, joined the military in 2008 and are assigned to Joint Naval Air Station, Fort Worth, Texas.

The latest case has inflamed chronic tensions between the U.S. military and Okinawa over base-related crimes and other issues. Okinawans also have been protesting plans to deploy the Marine Corps' MV-22 Osprey to a base there because of safety concerns.

Local opposition to the U.S. bases over noise, safety concerns and crime flared into mass protests after the 1995 rape of a schoolgirl by three American servicemen. That outcry eventually led to an agreement to close a major Marine airfield, but that plan has stalled for more than a decade over where a replacement facility should be located.

With Jon Jones-Chael Sonnen fight on the horizon, fighters wonder if smack tack prowess is more important

Chael Sonnen is a good fighter, but he's a masterful smack talker. There is no one in the UFC, including president Dana White, who can sell a fighter better than middleweight-challenger-turned-light-heavyweight-challenger Chael Sonnen. He proved that as he goaded UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones into a season coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" and a title fight.

It didn't matter that Jones had a more qualified contender waiting in Dan Henderson, or that Forrest Griffin was already preparing for his December bout with Sonnen. The fight went to Sonnen, the man who could pull in the biggest ratings on a stale show and the biggest dollars on a pay-per-view.

This has fighters wondering if they should be in the gym training or at an improv class, working on their smack talking skills. Henderson tweeted:

I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for the fans and just go to [expletive] talking school.?@danawhite

Griffin wondered the same when talking to "UFC Tonight."

"I'm not mad at him," Griffin said, referencing Sonnen. "Why fight your way to the top when you can talk your way to the top?"

Who can blame them? They've worked for years in the gym and in fights to get the fights they wanted, but a middleweight stepped in front of him because of his mouth. On a press Wednesday, White said it made sense.

"Basically Jon Jones is out until April. He's going to be sitting around for months anyway unable to fight. So it made sense for him to do The Ultimate Fighter. And everyone has been talking about this fight with Chael so it made sense for them to do TUF and then fight," White said.

Hear that? White said the fight was made because people were talking about it, not because Sonnen earned it. Every fighter on the UFC's payroll should take notice. Talking will earn you a fight when your skills cannot.
