Three news stories on Wednesday appeared that reported essentially the same thing:
Board members at Groupn (GRPN) were discussing firing the company's CEO Andrew Mason.
These news stories did not cite each other. Rather, they cited "sources" close to the situation. (Kara Swisher at All Things D broke the story.* Then Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal followed).
Often, when separate news stories contain essentially the same information and don't cite each other, it means that a person or company wants the information out there.
In the case of the Groupon, it was not immediately obvious who stood to gain from the Andrew Mason information.
It didn't help Andrew Mason, certainly.
And it didn't help the company, whose leadership was suddenly thrown into limbo.
And it didn't help the board as a whole, which looked like it was stabbing its CEO in the back.
It seemed unlikely that high-quality publications like All Things D, Bloomberg, and the Wall Street Journal would run with secondhand information. So it seemed the information had come directly from (or at the behest of) one or more of the board members who are discussing firing Mason.
Judging from the Wall Street Journal's story, which cited "fractures" and "clashes" between Andrew Mason and board members Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell, it's not hard to guess who those board members might be.
In any event, leaking information like that was a cutthroat thing to do.
And it put Andrew Mason in an incredibly awkward position.
For one thing, it forced him to address in public the question of whether the board might fire him, which he did at the Business Insider Ignition conference. Mason had a good answer for that question: With the stock getting clobbered, of course the board was discussing whether he is the right guy for the job. But boards generally have those discussions in private, not in newspapers.
Importantly, if everyone on the board wanted to fire Mason, there would have been no need to leak the story. The board could just have canned Mason at the upcoming meeting and announced the news when it was a fait accompli. So it seems likely that a board member or two want to oust Mason and other board members don't--and that the ones who do want to oust him blindsided him.
(That was the impression I got in our interview, by the way--that Mason had been blindsided. He was articulate and composed, but he also seemed almost resigned to the fact that he was going to get canned).
It will be interesting to one day get the full story.
It will also be interesting to see how the situation plays out.
And inasmuch as someone on the Groupon board apparently wants us to have a public discussion about whether Andrew Mason should be canned, let's go ahead and have one.
The fire-Mason case is clear:
The give-Mason-more-time case, however, is also compelling:
What decision will the board make? What's the right decision?
That's a tough one.
In my opinion, it depends a lot on Andrew Mason.
Andrew Mason has led Groupon this far (and very few observers appreciate how spectacularly hard that has been to do). If Andrew Mason wants to fight to keep his job, commits to learning more about how to run a multi-national corporation and communicate better with Wall Street and the media, and remains excited and passionate about his job, then he should be given more time. Not an indefinite amount of time, but more time.
If, on the other hand, Andrew Mason has learned that managing a huge global corporation, dealing with the media and investors, and continuing to build and manage a top-notch senior executive team is just not as much fun or as rewarding as leading Groupon in the early years, then he should step aside (or get canned).
This, by the way, is not a new situation for a founder-CEO to find himself in.
The skills and leadership ability required to grow a startup are different than those required to turn around and manage a vast global corporation. And many talented entrepreneurs and executives decide that they prefer one to the other.
I have huge respect for Andrew Mason for doing the interview today. Most CEOs would have cancelled the conference appearance. I also have huge respect for what Mason and his team have accomplished at Groupon over the past three years.
If Mason wants some more time to prove himself and fix Groupon, the board should give him more time.
If he doesn't, I hope he resigns quickly, helps hire a great new CEO, and then eventually gets more credit for building the company than he has to date.
The reason that leak was so ruthless, though, is that it will be hard to recover from.
Groupon's CEO has been placed in limbo.
To resolve the situation in Mason's favor would require the resignation of the board members who want him gone. But even this wouldn't fix it. Everyone would know why these board members were quitting--because they had lost confidence in the CEO--and that wouldn't help Mason's authority, either.
Even if Andrew Mason wants to fight for his job, in other words, it will be a tough fight to win.
Whoever stabbed him in the back knew what they were doing.

(Photo : Barnes and Noble) A first time author, Young wrote his memoir naturally, as things came back to him, and says he takes life the same way.
Old dogs can learn new tricks. While he might be a rocker in his twilight years, musician Neal Young continues to prove he can surprise fans just as he did when he first hit the stage 50 years ago. Young will participate in a live Twitter event to promote his new memoir "Waging Heavy Peace" on Nov. 28.
According to a press release from Young's publisher, Penguin, the legendary singer-songwriter will hold a Q&A session about his autobiography as part of Book Club Twitter Chat, sponsored by Blue Rider Press and Penguin Online. The event will held on Nov. 28 from 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm (EST).

[Ed: Event has been postponed, check back for updates]
Young first showed off his social media savvy in October when the artist took questions from fans to promote the release of his new album "Psychedelic Pill." The event was a hit for Twitter, and attracted lots of press attention.
"Waging Heavy Peace" was Young's first attempt at writing, but just like his music - that humble, shaggy-dog swagger, the virtue of cleverness in simplicity - he makes it look easy. It's endearing just how surprisingly unassuming, and willing he is in telling his story.
"Waging Heavy Peace" falls on the heavier side of rock n roll memoirs at 500 pages. Young meanders from talking about music, to his admittedly crazy ideas for eco-powered classic cars, to his family and medical conditions, including polio, epilepsy, and a brain aneurysm. Young likes to refer to himself as a crazy idealist, and even sometimes, still, a hippie. The book is filled with the rocker's plans for everything from his personal archives, to his charity foundations to feature films.
Young wrote his memoir as things naturally came back to him, just as he likes to live his life. Young's a gleeful walking contradiction, and he seems at peace with that. Having never written a book, or ever been "much of a reader," Young reportedly rejected more than half the edits to his manuscript.
"Writing is very convenient, has a low expense, and is a great way to pass the time," he writes. "I highly recommend it to any old rocker who is out of cash and doesn't know what to do next."
Just like much of his enigmatic music, Young leaves much to be interpreted in "Waging Heavy Peace," presenting his story through a series of episodes from his remarkable career. But there are still plenty of gems of wisdom and revealing anecdotes hiding in the clouded rough of his brain.
Young relates his struggles with anxiety in his youth, and addiction to smoking marijuana. The songwriter apparently had trouble completing even the simplest of tasks in public, like going to the store. Young "couldn't even handle the detail in the hallways, in the aisle ways - all the packages and everything used to just freak me out," he writes. Eventually, about halfway through the shopping trip, he would drop everything and need to leave the store.
Now, for the first time since 17, he's sober. "You know, I might have been an addict," he says, "but I didn't have the gene problem, where you really turn out to be an alcoholic. I just decided if I was going to stop smoking weed, I'd stop drinking, too."
The book's philosophical title comes from a conversation about Pono, his almost foolishly ambitious project to restore full audio quality to digital music. Without full audio quality, he says, music won't take you into "the spirit world." That seems to illuminate much of what continues to be so charming about Young, balancing idealism with profound, universal truths. Even if they are hippie-truths.
Young, who recently turned 68-years-old, is currently wrapping up his North American "Alchemy Tour" with Crazy Horse.

Written in 1975, Boy Meets Boy is a sparkling musical comedy set against the backdrop of the abdication crisis in pre-war Britain. The big difference is that this is an alternative 1936, where gay relationships are perfectly acceptable and high society is quivering with excitement at the impending nuptials of Boston millionaire Clarence Cutler and British aristocrat Guy Rose. It?s a bizarre leap to take but writers Bill Solly and Donald Ward take it with impeccable flair, crafting an exquisite pastiche that manages at turns to be both cheerfully sentimental yet vaguely subversive. Solly?s music and witty lyrics pay affectionate homage to the likes of Porter and Berlin while the book, co-written with Ward manages in one fell swoop to put the word ?gay? back into the term ?gay musical comedy?.
Stephen Ashfield brings a sense of worldly realism to the commitment-phobic journalist, Casey O?Brien, breaking as many hearts as he does news stories. O?Brien career as a lothario is finally stalled by Craig Fletcher?s shy, sensitive Guy Rose, a beauty hidden behind geeky spectacles and bad hair. Ashfield and Fletcher make an adorable couple, pulling off the humour of the hilarious It?s A Boy?s Life at the same time as developing a romantic storyline that is as sentimental as it is satisfying. Beyond the romance there is the louche comic delivery of Ben Kavanagh, as jilted groom Clarence Cutler, providing many of the laugh-out-loud moments throughout the evening and a thoroughly committed ensemble, bringing colour and vivacity to Solly and Ward?s screwball comedy.
Director Gene David Kirk?s lucid direction, his swansong as artistic director for this venue, is complemented by Lee Proud?s bold choreography that mirrors both the romance and the wit of the piece. Boy Meets Boy might not be to everybody?s taste, but there is an unfailing sense of optimism about this show that makes it one of the most pertinent revivals of the year.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Emerging from a closed-door meeting, three Republican senators said Tuesday they are more troubled than ever with comments made days after the deadly Sept. 11 raid in Libya by Susan Rice, the U.N. ambassador and President Barack Obama's possible choice for secretary of state.
Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte met privately with Rice and acting CIA Director Michael Morell for more than an hour on her much-maligned explanations of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.
Ayotte said Rice told the lawmakers that her comments in a series of national television interviews five days after the attack were wrong. However, that failed to mollify the three lawmakers, who have talked about blocking her nomination if the president taps her to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got and some that we didn't get concerning evidence that was leading up to the attack on the consulate and the tragic death of four brave Americans and whether Ambassador Rice was prepared, or informed sufficiently, to give the American people the correct depiction of the events that took place," McCain told reporters.
Said Graham: "Bottom line I'm more disturbed now than I was before that 16 September explanation."
The three insisted that they need more information about the Libyan raid before they even consider Rice as a possible replacement for Clinton.
"I'm more troubled today," said Ayotte, who argued that it was clear in the days after the attack that it was terrorism and not a spontaneous demonstration prompted by an anti-Muslim video.
Despite lingering questions over her public comments after the Benghazi attack, Rice has emerged as the front-runner on a short list of candidates to succeed Clinton, with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., seen as her closest alternative.
The strong statements from the three senators clouded Rice's prospects only two days after Republican opposition seem to be softening. Rice planned meetings on Wednesday with Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is in line to become the top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.
Corker said Tuesday that he had concerns with a possible nomination.
"When I hear Susan talk she seems to me like she'd be a great chairman of the Democratic National Committee," Corker said. "There is nobody who is more staff supportive of what the administration does. That concerns me in a secretary of state."
Rice's series of meetings on Capitol Hill will be a critical test both for Republicans, who will decide whether they can support her, and the administration, which must gauge whether Rice has enough support to merit a nomination.
A senior Senate aide said the administration was sounding out moderate members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, such as Corker and Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. Assessing the prospects for Rice before Obama makes any announcement would avoid the embarrassment of a protracted fight with the Senate early in the president's second term and the possible failure of the nominee.
Rice is scheduled to meet with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., her most vocal critic on Capitol Hill, and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H. McCain and Ayotte are members of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
On talk shows the weekend following the attack, which took place on the 11th anniversary of 9/11, Rice was given talking points that described the attack as a spontaneous protest of the film, even though the Obama administration had known for days that it was a militant assault.
Republicans called her nomination doomed, leading to a vigorous defense of her by Obama in his first postelection news conference. Since then, GOP lawmakers have appeared to soften their views. McCain, who said earlier this month that would he do everything in his power to scuttle a Rice nomination, said Sunday that he was willing to hear Rice out before making a decision.
Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had issued a statement highly critical of Rice on the day of Obama's news conference. He indicated Monday that perhaps she didn't know what had transpired in Benghazi on the day of the attack.
"I assumed she had full knowledge of everything that went on. I'm not at all convinced of that now. She very well could have been thrown under the bus," Inhofe said in an interview. He said she hadn't requested a meeting but he would be glad to meet with her.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday that the administration appreciated McCain's latest comments about Rice, but wouldn't say whether the president saw them as an opening to make the nomination. "Ambassador Rice has done an excellent job at the United Nations and is highly qualified for any number of positions," Carney said.
Several diplomats currently serving with Rice said that what she lacked in Clinton's star power, she could make up with a blunter approach that demands attention and has marked her tenure thus far at the United Nations.
Rice, who at 48 is relatively young, has been known to covet the job for years, but was passed over for Clinton in 2009. Since arriving in New York, she can point to a series of diplomatic achievements ? most notably the NATO-led air campaign that toppled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and tougher sanctions against Iran and North Korea over their nuclear programs.
But Rice has also been criticized ? along with other Security Council leaders ? for the failure of the U.N.'s most powerful body to take action to end the 19-month civil war in Syria.

Only the anti wrinkle cream that contains appropriate anti aging ingredients will work. No matter how costly a cream you buy and how sophisticated the beauty store and the jar is, it is the ingredients that work, not attractive packaging. In fact, creams that come with aggressive marketing and glossy ads are mostly hollow in their promises.
What a cream needs to work?
Three ingredients that scientists have proven to work on aging signs are Matrixyl 3000, Argireline, and Hyaluronic Acid. The cosmetic world regards them as the ultimate solution to wrinkle removal. They are not simple oils or moisturizers. These ingredients possess a unique set of abilities that show their prowess within the layers of the skin.
Matrixyl 3000 is an amazing skin fixer. It repairs damaged layers of the skin by penetrating deeply. It boosts collagen production and restructures the fibril network that degenerates due to lack of collagen. Studies show that this ingredient can reduce wrinkle visibility by 44 percent. Without the presence of this ingredient in an anti wrinkle cream, the cream is useless, as this is the one that restores one of the essential proteins, collagen, in the skin.
Argireline is a soothing agent. It is a peptide that relaxes facial muscles, which contract due to habitual facial expressions and contribute to forming creases on the face. This peptide works so well that dermatologists consider it to be the best alternative of botox. The latter paralyzes facial muscles, which is against nature. On the contrary, Argireline relaxes muscles, which is perfectly in compliance with nature.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a natural and powerful hydrator found in the body. It removes toxins from body cells and tissues, and supplies oxygen and nutrients to them. It keeps joints and cartilage lubricated. Studies show that this compound has the ability to hold thousands of times its own weight in water. It means, without this Acid, skin cells dehydrate. This is what happens when you age ? HA declines and skin cells lose their water content, leading to loose and creased skin surface.
Imagine a wrinkle remover containing all the above ingredients. How powerfully it will work on an aging skin! The good news is that such an anti aging formula does exist in the market. Since the day of its launch, it has given other OTC creams a run for their money. It has stunned women and they are still not able to believe that such a formula exists.
The cream is non-sticky and seeps into skin pores, working with the damaged fibril structure and increasing levels of collagen and elastin. Regular usage of this cream creates a drastic difference on the face. Gradually, you will find your wrinkles and fine lines getting lighter, and dark spots and discolorations becoming blurred.
What?s the name of such cream?
The cream is Hydroxatone. This is not a single cream, but a skin care brand that has created a line of products for keeping skin young and beautiful. The brand has received an unbelievable response for it has given women the ultimate anti wrinkle cream.

CallPlus chief executive Mark Callander has hit back at a Kiwihost survey that slated the customer service record of its Slingshot subsidiary, saying statements made by Kiwihost were very misleading and accusing it of "poor research standards".
Kiwihost, a private firm that provides customer service training to businesses, released a survey earlier this month that accused the country's telcos of providing "shocking customer service" . It rated Slingshot lowest, with a "strongly negative rating" of -23. The lowest possible rating, if all respondents were dissatisfied, would be -100.
Callander said Kiwihost's survey was only completed by 600 respondents. Slingshot had about 10 per cent of the broadband market, so it was likely only about 60 of its customers were surveyed.
Kiwihost asked people to rate providers but didn't ask if those responding were a customer or had any personal experience of each company, he said.
"More concerning is there is no context to the question at all, so responses are entirely open to interpretation."
Callander said Kiwihost's claims were dramatically different to its own research, which involved randomly contacting 5000 of its customers each month. That showed Slingshot's customer satisfaction had been trending upwards, he said. "We have 150 proud contact centre staff based in New Zealand doing an amazing job and providing great service.
"Reports and statements from companies such as Kiwihost which provide minimal information and context are very damaging not only to Slingshot, but the industry in general," he said.
CallPlus has been trying to turn around its image over the past few years. Callander acknowledged to Fairfax Media this month that it had been tarnished by complaints and an aggressive "cold calling" telemarketing campaign using a call centre in India.

Search engine optimizers make the most of this very strategy to promote their business among customers.
Making the most of Email marketing
Another secret of web advertising is to interact with customers through emails. Most of us do not forget to check our mail boxes. By presenting the brand message right through the inboxes of customers, advertisers can easily persuade them to go through the same. Email marketing is also a cost effective means of web advertising. Advertisers can sort out the mailing list of a particular email campaign and can target only those customers who will probably reach to the advertisement. A thorough demographic survey is however one of the assets of promoting a brand or business through email marketing.
Online advertising in any of its forms provides rich content and attractive graphic. Any visitor gets glued to the brand message because of such features. Most of the online ad campaigns convey interesting brand messages to customers which is why recall value is also pretty good through an online ad display. Banner advertising, virals, email and sms campaigns, PPC, pop ups etc. are some forms of online advertising adopted by brand owners to promote their products on web world.
Internet is a global platform for many products and services. Internet advertising is therefore the smartest means of brand communication. A brand or business advertised through online media can be accessed by customers from anywhere across the globe and also without any restraint of time factor. The message or information is available for 24 hours, 7 days a week, months and even for years. A website for a brand or business for example is one of the reliable means for anyone to access valuable information on the product or service. One can visit the website as many times as one prefers and also go through the information again and again. Repetitive readership is yet another advantage of creating an online presence of a brand or business.

Toni Della-Ratta
The F. David Fowler Career Center concluded the School?s first-ever, required Career Roadmap course for Global MBA students ? jump starting their job-search preparation with instruction on writing resumes, crafting LinkedIn profiles and handling interviews.
The 16-week course, which was taught to all 113 first-year GMBA students and wrapped up earlier this month, was aimed at not only improving students? knowledge of?job-search techniques and strategies, but helping them assess their skills and develop plans for managing their careers early in their MBA training.? It was taught by Career Center instructors.
A similar course was offered to undergraduates last year.? The MBA version kicked off this summer, before regular classes started.
?This was a very practical course,? said Toni Della-Ratta, the Center?s associate director of graduate career management services.? One obvious benefit, she said, is that the course provided a structure within which MBA students were required to write resumes and perform other job-search-related tasks that they might otherwise postpone until later in their course of study.
During the nine-part series, students conducted self-assessments; prepared written documents such as cover letters and resumes; developed plans to market themselves; and attended networking events and career fairs.? They used the tool Interview Stream to record themselves during mock interviews and sent the links to their coaches for assessment.
Social media was integrated into the course, with students receiving coaching on tailoring and presenting profiles on LinkedIn, the online professional network.
?Employers are actually hiring off of LinkedIn profiles,? said Della-Ratta.
One overall lesson the instructors tried to impart, she said,?is that today?s employers are increasingly looking for very specific skills, as opposed to hiring for?general business positions. That means students must carefully target themselves toward a particular industry, company or job that interests them.
?Many persons are coming back to get an MBA to change careers,? she said. ?What worked for them in the past might not work for them in their future.?
The Center has surveyed students on what they learned from the course, and their level of satisfaction.? Those results are being tabulated.

"The worst coffee shop or bookstore or whatever is the one that doesn't exist at all, it's only by bringing ideas to scale that you can achieve ubiquity."
There are many places whose markets are so small that its tough to support much diversity in product offerings and/or more specialized stores. Although these lower quality, mass produced options are inferior, they help to spread acceptance and build appreciation for the specialized goods (and services), which may ultimately lead consumers to explore and pursue higher quality versions of those goods. The spread of bagels across America is another example of this.
You gotta start somewhere, right?
But this got me thinking, what about the innumerable bad "Chinese" (Americanized-Chinese) restaurants all over America? Or bad "Thai"? Or bad "Japanese"? This hits closer to home for me. It's easier for me to accept the Bad Coffee > No Coffee argument since I rarely drink coffee. But is bad, super-Americanized Chinese food better than no Chinese food? I don't ever eat at Panda Express or Charlie Chang's--but coffee connoisseurs probably don't ever patronize Starbucks, either.
If we could see a definite trend toward Americans' appreciation and demand for better Chinese food, then I think I'd agree with the Bad Food > No Food argument. And honestly? I think we do see that trend, very slowly but surely. Though, there are many (most) who are satisfied with the dumbed-down Americanized versions of "exotic" cuisines.*
*And to be sure, Americanized-Chinese, in particular, has really evolved into its own thing at this point.

Levi West has two losses in his professional career, but something tells me his second one will be more memorable. As shown on Inside MMA, West lost by technical knockout: vomiting. (It's the second fight mentioned in the short clip.)
The old wives tale advises swimmers to stay out of a pool for at least 30 minutes after eating. Perhaps it needs to be revised for fighters, as well.

A study by UNLV?s International Gaming Institute concluded a resort complex featuring a hotel, casino, convention space and other entertainment amenities in the heart of Toronto could stimulate the economy of Canada?s largest city.
Instead of cannibalizing the market, the complex would spur growth for any surrounding businesses.
Meanwhile, the worldwide accounting firm Ernst & Young found that Toronto could collect almost $200 million a year from a casino complex in the form of tax revenues, on top of a one-time sale or lease of city-owned land.
So it wasn?t a surprise last week that Toronto city leaders, following the public release of the two reports, decided to ask residents if they favor a casino.
It?s also no wonder that Caesars Entertainment Corp. Senior Vice President Jan Jones and MGM Resorts Senior Vice President Alan Feldman are bumping into each other more often in Toronto than on the Strip.
Nevada?s biggest casino companies view Toronto as the industry?s next major battleground.
?It?s truly a potential destination we can?t ignore,? Jones said.
Earlier this year, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. announced plans to develop a single hotel-casino complex in Toronto. Government officials said the facility could generate $1 billion a year in gaming revenues.
Comparisons were immediately made between Toronto and Singapore.
Ernst & Young scaled back the revenue projections but still lauded the notion of a Toronto casino.
?It was noted that several characteristics of Toronto would make the city an attractive locale for international high rollers including the lack of taxes levied on gambling wins, the number of direct flights from Asian countries and the local demographics and family connections to Asia,? Ernst & Young officials wrote in the executive summary of its Commercial Casino in Toronto Study, which was researched on behalf of the city.
Singapore approved two casinos back in 2005, after much heated debate, as a means to drive tourism. Gaming was limited to a small portion of the two integrated resorts, but Singapore could surpass the Strip as the world?s second-largest gaming market behind Macau by the end of this year.
SINGAPORE MODEL
Toronto is following the Singapore model, and the debate is expected to be equally as furious. No casino will happen without the support of Toronto and its citizens.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford backs the casino idea, but the Toronto city council has 43 members and their decision process is expected to stretch into next year.
?I don?t envy that task,? said Jones, a former two-term mayor of Las Vegas who oversaw a panel with five elected council members.
Ten days ago, Caesars released conceptual artist renderings of what a downtown Toronto casino complex might look like. Caesars is in partnership with Rock Gaming of Detroit, the company?s joint venture partner in the Horseshoe casinos in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Baltimore.
Jones said the Caesars project would be on Toronto?s downtown Front Street, and likened the complex to Harrah?s New Orleans, which is near that city?s French Quarter. Casino resorts of that caliber cost $1 billion to $2 billion to build.
?It?s all conceptual and at the end of the day, we would locate a casino where the city requests,? Jones said.
MGM Resorts, which jumped into the Toronto gaming debate early in the process, has championed Exhibition Place, a location outside of downtown that has support from several city leaders.
Canadian media reported in September than Jones and Feldman actually crossed paths between meetings at Toronto?s City Hall.
Meanwhile, Las Vegas Sands Corp. President Mike Leven, during the company?s third-quarter earnings conference call, said the casino operator chose a downtown site.
In August, Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson had a private meeting with Toronto?s mayor.
?We don?t know where that project is going to go at the moment, but we?re ready to pursue it as soon as the project is released and our conditions are met,? Leven said. ?The return on investment is critical, particularly in the North American locations.?
Wynn Resorts Chairman Steve Wynn in October visited several potential casino sites, including the Toronto Convention Center and the Canadian National Exhibition grounds.
GAUGING ?CANNIBALIZATION?
The reports by Ernst & Young and the International Gaming Institute have only added fuel to what?s expected to be a heated competition.
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas study is the first of four the research team plans to conduct on the Toronto market on behalf of the Canadian Gaming Association, a nonprofit advocacy group. Other studies include the potential social costs of the casino, any impact the casino would have on problem gambling in the region, and the economic impact of a casino.
Bo Bernhard, executive director of the International Gaming Institute, said the school?s researchers wanted to study emerging gaming markets. He and Kahlil Philander reviewed research on casino gaming?s impact on other gaming and nongaming industries in the U.S. to determine any effects of ?cannibalization.?
Bernhard and Philander concluded a Toronto casino would not hurt nearby businesses or diminish lottery revenues.
?When the studies are applied to the Toronto situation, you have megaconvention facilities, a large hotel and tourists having lots of disposable income,? Bernhard said. ?They will venture out and spend that money in nearby locations.?
The Toronto area already has several forms of gaming, including lotteries, horse racing and a slot-machine casino at the Woodbine racetrack.
Ontario is home to a dozen small and midsized casinos, including Casino Niagara in Niagara Falls, and Caesars Windsor, which has been operated by Caesars Entertainment since 1998.
?There is minimal downside risk,? said Philander, who lived for a year in downtown Toronto while studying economics at the University of Toronto.
?Cannibalization is often claimed with respect to casinos but we could not find strong empirical evidence to support this argument,? Philander said.

"Saul Steinberg: A Biography" (Doubleday/Nan A. Talese), by Deirdre Bair
When New Yorker cartoonist Saul Steinberg was honored in 1974 by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the architect Philip Johnson puzzled out loud over how best to describe him.Although Steinberg was about to receive the gold medal for graphic art, wasn't he also a satirist, a painter, a humorist and an architect? After bemoaning the seeming necessity of putting artists into categories, Johnson concluded by saying, "We cannot pigeonhole Saul Steinberg."Now Deirdre Bair, the author of well-regarded books about Samuel Beckett, Carl Jung and Simone de Beauvoir, has taken stock of this wildly inventive and original artist in a 600-page volume that marks the first comprehensive biography of Steinberg since he died in 1999 at age 84.Steinberg was happy to call himself a writer who draws. An architect by training, he delighted in drawing fantastic buildings and cityscapes, including his iconic "View of the World From Ninth Avenue," the New Yorker cover endlessly parodied since it was published in 1976.Steeped in the Dada, surrealist and cubist art movements of his youth in Romania and later Italy, Steinberg never lost his off-kilter, intentionally childlike and absurdist view of the world. He peopled his imaginary worlds with animated letters, numbers and punctuation marks; with battle-ax women patterned on his domineering mother; and with a profusion of animals and objects that were his own personal totems yet which resonated with a wide swath of the public.Even as a penniless Jewish refugee awaiting permission to enter the U.S. at the start of World War II, Steinberg found success selling his offbeat cartoons to the New Yorker. Once he was finally settled in New York, nothing could stop his rapid rise to the pinnacle of the art world, not even his hypochondria, anxiety and lifelong depression. In "Saul Steinberg: A Biography," readers learn that Steinberg was a man of insatiable appetites: for women, books, objects and travel. Bair gets bogged down at times in the details - the endless parties and dinners with art world celebrities; the haggling over commissions and negotiations with publishers; his apartment and studio renovations; and the bitter fights with his lovers. But overall she has done an excellent job of trying to answer the question that perplexed even Steinberg's ex-wife and lifelong friend Hedda Sterne when she considered his work: "Where did this come from?"---Online:http://www.deirdrebair.com/index.htmlSource: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/11/20/3926651/review-bair-writes-bio-of-artist.html

The answer is yes. Finnish researchers have developed a triumphant solution for predicting responses of breast cancer cells to a set of cancer drugs. The prediction is based on the genomic profiles of the cancer cells. Harnessing genomic profiles of cells in choosing the best treatment is considered the holy grail of personalised medicine.
The team led by Professor Samuel Kaski from Helsinki institute of Information Technology (HIIT), a joint research centre of Aalto University and University of Helsinki, Finland, presented its winning solution at the DREAM 2012 conference on November 13 in San Francisco. The team's solution outperformed 47 other teams in the prediction challenge world-wide.
Computational methods integrate multiple views of the genomic profile of cancer cells
It is well known that drug therapies may effectively kill cancer cells in one patient, but not in another patient suffering from the same type of cancer. However, the molecular determinants underlying the differences in drug response have not so far been sufficiently understood.
The organisers of the NCI-Dream challenge provided data of breast cancer cells for the training of computational sensitivity prediction models. They evaluated the participants' models on test measurements of drugs that were unknown to the participants.
As in most current biomedical experiments, several types of measurements had been collected on the cancer cells: activity of genes, epigenetics, and genetic profiles. The key problem was to optimally combine the complementary "views" that the different measurements yield.
Although the result is still far from clinical applicability, computational personalised medicine has taken an encouraging, prize-winning step forward.
